WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the breast tissue of male. It is the swelling of the breast tissue in males. It is a common problem during puberty as well as later adulthood. The disease is caused by hormonal imbalance (oestrogen and testosterone) at the breast tissue level. Various medications and medical conditions can cause gynecomastia and when the drug is discontinued or medical condition cured, it will frequently resolve. The condition is the most common reason for medical evaluation of the male breast. It can affect one or both breasts.
Generally, gynecomastia is not a serious problem though it can be tough to cope with. The condition sometimes cause pain in the breasts. It may go away on its own. However, if it persists, medication or surgery may help. The most common symptoms include swollen breast gland tissue and breast tenderness.
SURGICAL TREATMENT OF GYNECOMASTIA
Surgical treatment of gynecomastia is appropriate in the following situation:
- Medical therapy is ineffective
- Longstanding gynecomastia
- The disease interferes with daily living
- There is suspicion of malignancy of breast
The surgical treatment involves the removal of glandular tissue coupled with liposuction. Minimally invasive surgery can be done. It will only be associated with few complications and prompt recovery. The uses of delicate cosmetic surgical techniques are needed to prevent unsightly scarring.
